Fifteen years ago, Metropolis Metering started an energy revolution with the installation of Australia’s first residential smart meter.

Installed at the home of Nadia and Daniel Marsic in the leafy Melbourne suburb of Ivanhoe, on 7 February 2007, the smart meter continues to operate flawlessly to this day.

Until then smart meters had only been available for large commercial customers using dial up modems to connect meters.  That was cumbersome and unscalable.

No one had dared think it possible that smart meters could be made available for domestic use, until Metropolis proved that it could, using Internet technologies to turn it around and have every smart meter push data instead of trying to pull it.

Today the Internet is used to connect all manner of electronic devices globally in what is called the Internet of Things, but we are proud to say Metropolis was the first in Australia to use the Internet for smart metering and the first to register residential smart meters with AEMO.

Metropolis has collected over half a million individual meter reads from this one meter since it was installed and expects to collect another half a million reads before it is decommissioned.
